According to environmental senator Manja Schreiner, there is currently no reason to worry about the drinking water supply in Berlin. However, there is no way around the economical use of water.
"Berlin's drinking water supply is safe," said the CDU politician on Thursday during a visit to the Beelitzhof waterworks in Nikolassee. "To ensure that it stays that way, we must increasingly take precautions. Because it faces great challenges due to demographic and climatic changes."
Measures are therefore needed to counteract the continuing increase in drinking water demand and to reduce peak demand. A new approach to water is necessary. There is now a consensus that water conservation must play an important pillar in the future water strategy, said the Senator for Transport, Environment and Climate Protection. "The dry years 2019 to 2022 have impressively shown how climate change is already having an impact." Therefore, she said, initiatives are needed to at least slow down the increase in drinking water consumption and to ensure the careful use of water. "Water is an increasingly precious commodity."
