By 2026, another 4560 student dormitory places are to be built in Berlin.
This was announced by State Secretary Armaghan Naghipour in a response to a parliamentary question by Adrian Grasse. A total of around 17,350 places will then be available in Berlin. This includes apartments and rooms of the Studierendenwerk and other providers. About 200,000 people study in Berlin.
Places in Berlin's student dormitories are rare and coveted: At the beginning of December 2022, more than 5,000 students were on the Studierendenwerk's waiting list. The average waiting time for a place in a student residence is three semesters. In 2015, the then red-black senate had decided to build 5000 additional dormitory places. Of these, 2752 places had been created by August last year, Naghipour said. The shortage of new building land, cost increases for building materials or lack of capacity at service providers were hidrances in the construction of new dormitory places.
