For one month, Berlin’s gay and lesbian community plans to use “Pride Month” to promote greater visibility and equality.
The month, which features numerous events, begins this Thursday, with the highlight being the big Christopher Street Day Parade (CSD) on July 25. Berlin’s “Pride Month” was launched in 2021 by Berliner CSD e.V. “to give more space to current issues facing the queer community.” This year’s lineup includes exhibitions, bike tours of the city, panel discussions, concerts, and, of course, parties.
Ahead of the Berlin House of Representatives election, a “Queer Election Forum with Political Leaders” is planned. On July 24, St. Mary’s Church will host a “CSD Service: Love Needs Community.” Another highlight is the Lesbian and Gay Street Festival in Schöneberg on July 18 and 19. On July 23, “Canal Pride” will take place: Numerous boats will cruise the Spree as part of a demonstration and party. The “Dyke*March” Berlin—a demonstration for lesbian visibility—will begin on the eve of Berlin’s CSD on July 24.
Berlin’s Christopher Street Day is one of the largest events for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer community in Europe. The State Office for Equal Treatment – Against Discrimination (LADS) estimates that between 200,000 and 300,000 LGBTI people have made Berlin their home. CSD commemorates the 1969 uprisings of the queer community on Christopher Street in New York City (USA).
