This program is primarily aimed at elementary school students. However, older students may also enroll under certain conditions.
According to the Senate Department for Education, Youth, and Family Affairs, a total of 3,600 spots are available in swimming courses during the summer break—3,000 of which are for elementary school students and 600 for middle school students who do not yet hold a Bronze Badge.
The swimming lessons will take place at seven locations in Berlin: the Finckensteinallee Swimming Pool, the Hüttenweg Swimming Pool, the Thomas-Mann-Straße Swimming Pool, the Fischerinsel Swimming Pool, the Kreuzberg Swimming Pool, the Gropiusstadt Multi-Purpose Pool, and the Allendeviertel Swimming Pool. Registration opens on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at www.schwimmkurse-sportjugend.de. Participation in the courses is free of charge.
The goal of these free swimming lessons is to reduce the number of non-swimmers in Berlin. The lessons are offered every year during the Easter, summer, and fall breaks by the Senate Department for Education, Youth, and Family in collaboration with the Berlin State Sports Federation, Sportjugend Berlin, the Berlin Swimming Association, and seven Berlin swimming clubs.
