Senate Commission: Housing construction is progressing

Panorama

According to its own assessment, the Senate has set the right course for housing construction in Berlin.

The Senate Commission on Housing Construction, which was launched in April 2022, has proven particularly successful, as Building Senator Christian Gaebler explained after the most recent meeting. Thanks to the commission's work, around 16,700 new apartments have been initiated to date, the construction of which had previously been stalled.

Commission to identify key housing projects and solutions

In Gaebler's view, the Senate Commission will continue to be indispensable in the future. "It is a successful model that will hopefully be continued after the election," he said. The Commission's goal is to improve the framework conditions for new construction in Berlin, accelerate key housing projects and agree on solutions to obstacles. This also applies to conflicts of use, for example with regard to nature conservation and species protection.

High demand for housing

Gaebler pointed out that securing school provision is a prerequisite for housing construction, which the commission is also addressing. In the Gehrenseehöfe in Lichtenberg, for example, more than 1,000 new flats were made possible after the school planning was adapted to the construction project. Overall, Gaebler gave a positive assessment of housing policy: around 80,000 new homes are expected to be built in Berlin between 2022 and 2026. Gaebler admitted that demand is even greater. "That is why the Senate Commission remains important."
