On Friday, International Green Week opens its doors to visitors.
Around 1,600 exhibitors will be presenting agricultural specialities from German regions and around 50 countries. After only fake cattle were on display in the animal hall last year due to the rampant foot-and-mouth disease at the time, real cows and sheep will once again be in the stalls this year. In the flower hall, the focus is on Berlin in the 1920s under the motto "Babylon Garden".
Green Week is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The agricultural show was first held in February 1926. This is now the 90th edition. At the opening on Thursday, Governing Mayor Kai Wegner was among those who gave a speech. He emphasised the relevance of the fair for the capital: "International Green Week is one of the most important trade fairs in our city – and it is a trademark for Berlin. What once began as a local commodity exchange is now one of the most important platforms for agriculture, food and horticulture worldwide."
