The Ethnological Museum displays around 500,000 ethnographic, archaeological and cultural-historical objects from Africa, Asia, America and Australia, supplemented by sound recordings, photographic documents and films.
Originating from the royal Kunstkammer, the Ethnological Museum of Berlin has been one of the most important of its kind internationally since it was founded in 1873. Around 500,000 ethnographic, archaeological and cultural-historical objects from Africa, Asia, America and Australia are complemented by large collections of sound recordings, photographic documents and films. In 1999, the Phonogramm-Archiv was included in the UNESCO "Memory of the World" program.
The display collection is divided into thematically different focal points: The pre-Hispanic cultures of Meso-, Central and South America are presented in the "American Archaeology" section. Masterpieces of African art, including those from the Kingdom of Benin, Cameroon and the Congo region, are presented in the newly designed Africa section. Smaller exhibition areas are dedicated to the everyday culture of East Asia and ethnomusicology.
