The Bode Museum on Museum Island is home to the sculpture collection, the Museum of Byzantine Art, over 100 works from the Picture Gallery and a large part of the coin collection.

The Bode Museum presents treasures from over 15 centuries in impressive neo-baroque architecture. The works on display come from all over the Mediterranean region, but also directly from Berlin and the Netherlands. The number of exhibits in the wide-ranging focal points invite you to plan enough time for a visit to the Bode Museum.

Sculpture collection at the Bode Museum

The sculpture collection is one of the largest and oldest in the world - its beginnings date back to the early 17th century. Visitors are given an in-depth insight into the art of sculpture from around 500 AD. They can trace the transformation of art from the early Middle Ages through the late Gothic and Renaissance periods to the Baroque and Romanesque periods. The works of Italian masters promise particular diversity, but the development of German sculpture is also documented with numerous works.

On the trail of Byzantine culture

In the middle of the sixth century, the Byzantine Empire extended to almost the entire Mediterranean region. The exhibits in the Museum of Byzantine Art are correspondingly diverse. Works and everyday objects from southern Europe, the Middle East, Turkey, Russia and North Africa tell the story of the rise and fall of Byzantium and life in the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople.

Bode Museum: Highlights

Particular eye-catchers are the relief of the Pazzi Madonna (Donatello, around 1420), Bernini's "Satyr with Panther" (1615), the mosaic icon with Christ the Redeemer (1st quarter of the 20th century) and the sculpture "Dancer" by Antonia Canova (1809-1812). Not to be forgotten: The magnificent museum building itself is undoubtedly a highlight.
