Ulysses Jenkins: Without Your Interpretation

"Without Your Interpretation" at the Julia Stoschek Collection in Berlin is the first retrospective of the extraordinary video and performance artist Ulysses Jenkins.

Born and based in Los Angeles, Jenkins' video and media works show how representations of marginalized groups are influenced by media-mediated images, sound, and (pop)cultural visual languages. Ulysses Jenkins draws on archival footage, photographs, image manipulation processes, and soundtracks to interrogate issues of race and gender in relation to rituality, historiography, and the power of the state.

Video, Photography and Collaborative Works

The exhibition "Without Your Interpretation" features over 15 video works and more than 60 works by the artist, providing insight into the versatility of Ulysses Jenkins' oeuvre. The exhibition also includes works created in collaboration with other artists such as Senga Nengudi, David Hammons, and Kerry James Marshall, documentary material from Jenkins' early murals and performances, and photographs.
