Reporting to the Berlin Urban Nature Pact

Teaser Reporting
Biodiversity in Cities

By signing the Berlin Urban Nature Pact, a city automatically commits to joining the CitiesWithNature initiative if it is not already a member. This integration is crucial, as the CitiesWithNature platform serves as the reporting mechanism for the Berlin Urban Nature Pact. A profile will be created, and login details will be shared with the designated contact person.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework recognizes (in Action Area 7, Monitoring and reporting of the Plan Of Action) CitiesWithNature and RegionsWithNature as the platform where cities monitor and report on their voluntary commitments to national and global biodiversity targets. These contributions can then also be included in National Reports under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Berlin Urban Nature Pact Cities will have access to a straightforward and effective system for monitoring and reporting. This system provides an overview of selected targets, baseline levels, and implementation progress. The monitoring framework builds on existing efforts and performance indicators already in use by the Berlin Urban Nature Pact Cities. These metrics help Berlin Urban Nature Pact signatories identify the most relevant targets, milestones, and indicators suited to their specific contexts and resources. The indicators are drawn from various international frameworks that assess urban nature, including the City Biodiversity Index, the CitiesWithNature Action Platform, and the IUCN Urban Nature Indexes.

Pact Cities are able to document and report their yearly progress towards the Pact targets through the CitiesWithNature Action Platform and present their results during the annual Berlin Urban Nature Pact meetings. This reporting serves as a contribution to the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) set out by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UN CBD).

By adhering to the principles and targets of the Pact, Pact Cities can contribute significantly to the global biodiversity agenda. The Pact is not merely a document; it is a call to action for cities to become leaders in the global movement toward a nature-positive century.
