Guided tour: Berlin Brutalism

Berlin Brutalism: On structure, concrete and cultural heritage

Autonomous, monumental and magical. The brutalist buildings of the post-war period have a special appearance. Why are we fascinated by these harsh and raw materials?

The tour starts at the Technical University architecture building on Ernst-Reuter-Platz, with its expressive forms and clear grid. The German Opera House neraby was designed by Fritz Bornemann. From the street, it appears as a hermetic and introverted box – inside, with its open foyers and low auditorium, it tells of a modest concept of culture.

Heading north, the tour continues to a touching sacred building: the Regina Martyrum Catholic memorial church combines a strict, orthogonal order, an inner courtyard enclosed by high walls with a filigree church interior and visually stunning art.In the debate about whether to protect or demolish a listed building, the three buildings shed light on the significance of Brutalism in Berlin.
