Since 2025, the D3 high-rise project has blocked the view of the building of the former Hotel Stadt Berlin.
The hotel building was part of the overhaul of Alexanderplatz that began in 1964. It opened in 1970 on the 21st anniversary of the GDR’s foundation.
The luxurious Interhotel was a sensation in East Berlin: fast lifts, 1,982 comfortable beds in 1,006 rooms on 30 floors. There was a panorama bar on the 37th floor. No fewer than 1,000 staff members looked after guests, most of whom came from the “non-socialist economic area” and the Soviet Union.
During the renovation in 2007, its aluminium and steel curtain wall was replaced with a glass façade. At a height of 123 m, the hotel is still among the tallest hotel buildings in Germany.
