Cultural institutions in the centre
The highlights in the social and cultural centre on Schillingstraße included the Cinema International, with its foyer that seems to float above the footpath. The pavilion to the right of it housed the legendary Mocha Dairy and Ice Cream Parlour. One of the GDR’s first pop hits made it famous throughout the Republic in 1970. Café Restaurant Moscow symbolised the friendship between the GDR and the Soviet Union and featured a restaurant, bar, dance café and night bar.
