Shopping spree on the avenue
The 2.3 km-long avenue was lined with large shop windows on either side. The range of products and services available here in the early 1950s was incredible: Where else could you buy watersports equipment, delicacies, game, cosmetics or lingerie in specialised shops?
The first German department store for children at Strausberger Platz was a highlight of the socialist boulevard. Adults were only allowed into its café if accompanied by children.
