Living on the boulevard
Roughly 5,000 apartments were built between 1952 and 1958 along the 2.3 km long avenue. The lucky first residents of the sought-after apartments were “activists, outstanding workers and workers in the rebuilding efforts.”
The rent, 90 Pfennig per square metre, gave tenants conveniences that seemed incredible at the time: a porter and a lift, district heating, a gas stove, waste disposal unit, telephone line, intercom system, bathtub, parquet floor – and access to the rooftop terrace with an unobstructed view of the avenue.
