Fresh start and future promise
The ‘16 principles of urban development’ were immediately applied to architecture: In 1951, Walter Ulbricht hailed the Deutsche Sporthalle (German Sports Centre; architect: Richard Paulick), with its impressive colonnade vestibule, as “a first step in the right direction”.
Architect Hermann Henselmann designed the high-rise at Weberwiese, combining monumental proportions with Schinkel-inspired lines.
This building and the other residential buildings along Stalinallee were largely built from bricks recycled from the war rubble.
