Helping with the European elections

  • I want to help with the European elections. What tasks have to be done?

Any person who is eligible to vote for the German Bundestag elections and is not a candidate for the 2024 European elections may sign up as an election assistant.

People are needed to supervise the local polling stations on the election day, June 9, 2024, to ensure the eligible voters cast their vote and to ensure votes are counted. People are also needed to help count the mail-in ballot votes.

    Election assistants have various functions:

    Election supervisor
    Clerk
    Normal election assistant
and deputies for each of these.

You can find more information for election assistants on the website of the Federal Returning Officer.

  • Who do I have to contact to sign up as an election assistant?

If you are interested, please contact the election office in the borough in which you reside.

  • Do I need training to be an election assistant, or where do I get information about my tasks?

For the election supervisors and clerks, there is a 90-minute training session shortly before the election.

All other assistants are instructed by these people at the polling station on the day of the election.

You can find out about the election procedures in advance, however: Information from the Federal Agency for Civic Education on polling stations

  • Do I get paid for working in a polling station?

You receive what is referred to as an allowance, that is, money for refreshments, for working in the polling station. This can be up to € 120 if you work as an election supervisor or clerk, or up to € 100 for counting mail-in ballots.

  • Democratic elections are important to me. Can I help with the election in another way?

You can volunteer, for example, with political campaigns, civil rights organisations or political parties. Many different associations and organisations are represented in Berlin who work for democracy and rely on volunteers.

You can also follow official channels on social media, share the content and motivate other people to vote in the European elections.
