Starting November 22, the Spreepark Art Space in the Eierhäuschen will present the new exhibition “Im Dazwischen.” Before the
Spreepark reopens in the summer of 2027, the exhibition takes a look at a special phase in the history of the former amusement park: the period between its status as a “lost place” and its visible transformation into a public park for art, culture, and nature.
After the park closed in 2001, a space that was as hidden as it was vibrant emerged behind the fence of the GDR’s only permanent amusement park, and it was used in various ways. Since 2018, an ongoing artistic program has accompanied the park’s transformation. Artists were invited to engage with the site, its history, and its possible future. The result is an artistic laboratory that conceives of the park as a space for experience and raises questions about urban society, urban nature, and coexistence.
“Im Dazwischen” offers insights into the artistic research, interventions, and projects from that period. Some of the works were further developed or reimagined for the exhibition. Six artists, curators, and an architectural collective explore the Spreepark through videos, installations, sound works, and performative pieces as a mirror of social, ecological, and spatial changes. The artistic contributions revolve around the history of the site, the question of how memories are formed and transformed, and alternative concepts of communal enjoyment. They explore the history of amusement parks and movie theaters, the park as an experimental space for participation and belonging, and concepts of land ownership.
