Iris Ulbricht im Atelier.

Dr. Iris Ulbricht works with realistic and photorealistic painting. Her artistic practice focuses on dystopia, emotion, illusion and time, which she explores in large-format oil paintings and drawings with charcoal, graphite and ink. Her works deal with painting as a medium that not only depicts perception, but actively shapes and directs it and can make psychological processes visible. She is particularly interested in the tension between external image and inner reality, between visibility and imagination.

A central interest of her current works is the liminal space, i.e. transitional and threshold areas, as well as composition as a conscious guidance of the gaze. The question of how the eye moves through a picture and how painterly means structure perception plays an essential role here.

In her practice, she combines classical painting techniques with a contemporary examination of perception, illusion and inner visual worlds. In this way, she explores the potential of painting to make states and processes visible that often elude other forms of expression. Her work operates at the interface of painting, psychology and reflection and is at the same time closely linked to West Berlin.Translated with DeepL
