For students at Berlin schools, attendance will be mandatory again from next week on.
On Tuesday, March 01, compulsory attendance will be back in force again, the Senate Department for Education announced on Tuesday (22 February 2022). Due to the rising number of Coronavirus infections, mandatory attendance for students at Berlin schools was suspended since January 25 - parents have been able to decide whether their child attends school or works on assignments and projects at home. This suspension of compulsory attendance ends on Feb. 28, 2022.
According to the Senate Department, around 95 percent of students showed up for classes despite the suspension of compulsory attendance. Senator for Education Astrid-Sabine Busse announces numerous protective measures - such as serial testing, mandatory masks, regular ventilation and the use of air filtration devices - would be implemented in schools. She emphasized the importance of face-to-face teaching: "I am convinced that nothing can replace the direct contact with the teacher and fellow students."
