From today until the end of October, there will once again be a general ban on weapons in Berlin's major long-distance train stations and in several S-Bahn stations, which will also be monitored.

It was issued by the federal police responsible for a total of 15 Berlin train stations and Potsdam Central Station.

Checks possible without concrete suspicion

The ban, legally in the form of a so-called order, which is limited in time, gives the Federal Police the opportunity to check and, if necessary, search people even without concrete suspicion. It applies to knives, batons, irritant gas and other dangerous objects. The reason given was: "The number and intensity of violent crimes on railroad facilities continues to increase. Knives and other dangerous objects are frequently used."

Federal police check train stations

Compliance with the ban will be monitored and controlled by federal police officers at the stations mentioned, according to the announcement. In Berlin, the ban applies to the long-distance train stations Hauptbahnhof, Spandau, Bahnhof Zoo, Ostbahnhof, Gesundbrunnen, Ostkreuz, Lichtenberg, Südkreuz, Friedrichstraße and Alexanderplatz as well as the S-Bahn stations Jungfernheide, Wedding, Warschauer Straße, Neukölln and Hermannstraße.
