Berlin names a street after former Chancellor Helmut Kohl (CDU).

Hofjägerallee in the Tiergarten district is to bear the name Helmut-Kohl-Allee in future. This was decided by the Berlin Senate according to a press release. The street runs from the Victory Column through Tiergarten in the direction of the CDU federal headquarters. The Berlin district of Mitte is responsible for implementing the renaming.

Wegner: "A great street for a great man"

"By naming a street after Dr. Helmut Kohl, his historical achievement will be made visible in a worthy form," explained Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) on the Senate's decision. Kohl had rendered lasting services to Germany and Berlin through his decisive role in German reunification and European integration. "On the 35th anniversary of German reunification, we want to pay tribute to Dr. Helmut Kohl, the Chancellor of German reunification, and his outstanding achievements for our country."

Kohl is considered the "Chancellor of Unity"

Wegner had already announced the move at a CDU party conference on September 18. "It is a great road for a great man to whom we owe a great deal," said the CDU state leader. Kohl is also an honorary citizen of Berlin. A discussion about where Kohl (1930-2017) should be commemorated has been going on in Berlin for many years. Berlin's governing parties, the CDU and SPD, had agreed in the 2023 coalition agreement to name a street or square after him. Kohl is regarded worldwide as the "Chancellor of Unity". German-German reunification took place during his term of office from 1982 to 1998.
