Berlin will soon have its first public bicycle parking garage.
Construction work on the Schöneweide S-Bahn and regional train station in the Treptow-Köpenick district is set to begin this year. This was announced by the state-owned company Intravelo, which is responsible for the planning and subsequent operation.
The two-storey bicycle parking garage on the station forecourt is planned as a sustainable timber construction. It will offer capacity for around 800 parking spaces, of which around 240 will be additionally secured with a special access system developed by Infravelo. According to the information provided, there will also be ten particularly large parking spaces for cargo bikes or children's trailers, for example.
A service area with a bike workshop and bike rental as well as a repair station is also planned. In addition, a covered bicycle parking facility will provide storage space for around 300 bicycles, including 110 parking spaces, which will also be secured. According to Infravelo's current cost calculations, the total costs are around 5.3 million euros, with 2.6 million euros in funding expected from the Federal Ministry of Transport as part of the "Bicycle parking facilities at train stations" program.
