Solar mandate: about 16,000 new systems in one year

Approximately 210,000 households in Berlin are now, on a theoretical basis, supplied with solar power each year.

According to a report by the Economic Administration on the solar mandate, as of October 6, the capital had 69,000 photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of approximately 583 megawatts peak (MWp). Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of approximately 16,000 systems (124 MWp) within a year.

Franziska Giffey: "We're on schedule"

Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD) said: "For Berlin, more solar energy means greater climate protection, greater independence and resilience in energy supply, and, at the same time, opportunities for our economy." The goal is for solar energy to account for about 25 percent of Berlin's electricity generation by 2035 and to reach a total capacity of 4,400 MWp. This will require continuous expansion in the coming years, Giffey said. According to the latest figures from early October, the city is currently at 7.3 percent. "We’re on track." However, she noted, this is not a sure thing. Starting in 2023, property owners are required to install and operate a photovoltaic system when constructing new buildings or undertaking major roof renovations. When the solar mandate took effect, there were approximately 15,000 solar systems across Berlin with a total capacity of 194 MWp.
