Over the past three years, Berlin's aid organizations have cared for 120,000 refugees at the refugee center at the former Tegel Airport.
The State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) registered more than 93,746 war refugees from Ukraine in this period alone, the alliance of aid organizations announced.
In March 2022, an arrival center for Ukrainian war refugees was set up in Tegel, which was intended as a temporary solution. Refugees from many countries now live here in lightweight halls - some of them for many months. The center is run by the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, the German Red Cross, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe and Malteser Hilfsdienst. Around 730 employees of the aid organizations are working around the clock on behalf of the LAF, the aid organizations announced.
There are currently around 6,500 places available. Of these, around 2,700 are occupied by Ukrainians and around 1,000 by refugees from other countries. Over the past three years, the work has been repeatedly adapted to the new conditions, according to the aid organizations. In addition to general on-site support, the work now also includes leisure and counseling services, medical and nursing care as well as help with finding work and integration offers.
