More people in Berlin are reportedly infected with coronavirus again.
The number of laboratory-confirmed cases has risen significantly since around mid-October, the State Office of Public Health (Lageso) reported on Thursday in its weekly report on reported cases. Last week, there were a good 1,000 cases. Overall, Covid-19 continues to account for the majority of cases reported to Lageso.
As it is now mainly people who are more seriously ill who are being tested, a high number of unreported cases can be assumed. Experts had expected more people to become infected again in the cooler months of the year. However, the situation is no longer comparable to pandemic times because the population has now built up a broad immunity through vaccinations and infections.
According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the prevalence of acute respiratory diseases in Germany is currently at an elevated level. However, the figures usually fluctuate greatly in autumn and winter. The RKI cites the typical seasonal colds and the significant increase in the number of coronavirus infections since the summer as the reasons for the current trend. The figures from the monitoring of severe respiratory infections in hospitals, on the other hand, remain low according to the report.
