Due to high levels of absences and a general shortage of staff, Berlin's public transport authority (BVG) is temporarily restricting its bus services from the end of the summer vacations.
"Adjustments will be made on routes with dense headways or where there are parallel services," the company announced on Thursday. Overall, the current bus service is to be reduced by three percent starting August 22. "All routes and stops will continue to be served," the BVG assured. School services will also not be curtailed. Details on the affected bus routes will be announced by the BVG a few days in advance.
Buses are likely to travel at slightly longer intervals on heavily frequented routes. "The current pandemic development does also affects the transport companies," the BVG explained. "In combination with a tight labor market, this unfortunately means that bus service will have to be slightly adjusted after the holidays." The company wants to return to the usual schedule as soon as possible, a spokesman stressed. It remains unclear when this will be possible again.
