"Warm Light and Cold Beer" is the name of the new bike route through Berlin, which was signposted just in time for the start of the season.
According to the transportation authority, the route spans 25 kilometers and leads to 18 landmarks of Berlin’s industrial heritage. These include, in particular, sites related to the electrical industry and numerous breweries in Prenzlauer Berg. The route begins and ends at the German Museum of Technology in Kreuzberg.
The route takes cyclists along bike paths and side streets through various neighborhoods in Kreuzberg, Mitte, Wedding, Gesundbrunnen and Prenzlauer Berg. Cyclists can take breaks at nine restaurants located at sites of industrial heritage. There are 85 signposts and 100 route markers to help with navigation. According to the transportation authority, the new themed route is designed to give cyclists the opportunity to discover Berlin as an open-air museum of industrial heritage. Even for Berliners, there is still much to discover. Information about the route in German and English is available as printed flyers, PDF downloads, GPX tracks, and via the komoot route navigator.
"Warm Light and Cold Beer" is the first of eight Berlin industrial heritage bike routes dedicated to various themes in Berlin’s history. The route was developed by the Berlin Center for Industrial Heritage (bzi) in collaboration with the Department of Transportation and the tourism marketing organization Visit Berlin, among others. "Industrialization has shaped Berlin’s cityscape," said Andreas Kraus, State Secretary in the Senate Department for Transport and the Environment. The new bike routes bring the city’s industrial history to life. "At the same time, we are promoting sustainable, low-impact, and climate-friendly tourism in the city."
