Warning strike: Compulsory schooling remains in place in Berlin

Classroom

Compulsory schooling in Berlin will not be suspended on Friday due to the warning strike at BVG. However, students may still stay home in “justified individual cases” if their buses, subways, or trams are not running and there are no other means of transportation available.

This is according to a circular letter from the education authorities to public schools, the contents of which have been made available to the German Press Agency. In it, the education authorities ask schools to implement “prudent regulations.” “Since compulsory schooling remains in place, it would be possible, for example, to give the affected students assignments to do at home or to offer them other alternative learning opportunities,” the letter states. “Alternatively, trainees could also go to their companies.”

Schools decide independently on leave of absence and excuses

In any case, students or their parents must inform the school. The decision on leave of absence or subsequent excuses is generally the responsibility of the school. The education authorities are confident that local schools will make “good decisions” to ensure that lessons and all-day operations continue.

Warning strike on Friday and Saturday

Due to a warning strike by the BVG, there will be no trams or underground trains running on Friday and Saturday, and almost all bus routes will also be suspended. The S-Bahn will continue to run, however, as it is operated by Deutsche Bahn.
