From January 10 to 24, Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) will be collecting discarded Christmas trees.
There are two collection dates per district, according to the state-owned company. The exact dates can be found online or requested by telephone (030-75924900).
On the evening before collection day, trees must be placed clearly visible, in one piece and unpackaged, at the side of the road. All decorations must be completely removed. Trees must also be free of tinsel. Another note from the BSR: Christmas trees do not belong in the organic waste bin. The branches and trunks are unsuitable for fermentation.
If you want to get rid of your tree earlier, you can take it to one of the BSR recycling centres. This is free of charge for quantities of up to one cubic metre. According to its own figures, the BSR collects around 2,100 tonnes of Christmas trees every year. The trees are shredded and the remains are recycled in large composting plants and biomass power stations. The elephants at Berlin Zoo, on the other hand, are not fed with the discarded trees. According to BSR, only unused Christmas trees that have not been sold are suitable for this purpose.
