What does the CEO of the esports player foundation actually do? Julius Althoff personally revealed this to us in our 1:1. Our host, Christian Gaca, met with Julius at the great LVL venue in the heart of Berlin. They discussed the new funding project, “Esports Team Berlin,” and the Berlin esports ecosystem. Want to have a closer look? Let’s play!

Games CapitalBerlin (Christian Gaca): Can you give us an idea what the foundation does and what your role is?

Julius Althoff: The foundation, the esports player foundation, is the first not for profit organisation in the whole global esports ecosystem. And our goal is to develop esports stars, growing to become the best esports athletes in the world.

Where are we today, what is the place and what has been announced today? Something spectacular?

We are here at LVL and today we announced the Esports Team Berlin. A support system dedicated to the best esports athletes in Berlin. Young athletes in Brawl Stars, League of Legends and EA FC.

What sparked the idea of the Berlin Esports Team and who was involved?

Esports is part of the culture of every young man or young woman growing up. And so also from the politics side we need to do something in this space. And so we created this unique support system where Berlin is trying to support the best esports talents to reach the highest level, the global stage in esports.

What do you like most about the project on a personal level?

It’s just about seeing young talents grow, developing personally and also skills in a dedicated game and helping them to reach their highest potential, reaching global level, trying to get a footstep in the esports ecosystem.

Ecosystem is economics. Gaming and esports are important for Berlin, for the Berlin economics and cultural scene. Can you give us your thoughts on that?

Berlin is diverse. Berlin is innovative. So the same values are also part of the esports ecosystem and there’s the connection between those ecosystems.

That's an interesting view. What is the outside perception of Berlin? How does the rest of the gaming world see Berlin as a city?

Berlin is home of a lot of indie studios. Berlin is home of the Game Association in Germany. And also Berlin is home to a lot of esports events: The highest League of Legends tournaments are played in Berlin. They’re part of big gaming agencies.

What is your personal moment why Berlin is the game's capital?

A lot of indie studios are here. Each two years the Deutsche Computerspielpreis is held in Berlin and also it’s home to a lot of professional esports teams and so that’s the reason why it’s also esports and games capital in Europe, I think.
