In the Stralau neighborhood between Laskerstraße, Bödikerstraße and Persiusstraße, a lovingly tended community garden has been created from a former wasteland.
The handover of an approximately 2,600 square meter brownfield site in Berlin-Friedrichshain to the Bürgergarten Laskerwiese e.V. association took place in 2006. Today, the green oasis for the neighborhoods Rudolphkiez and Laskerkiez consists of a public green space with sunbathing lawns, a football pitch, barbecue facilities, a small pond and a community garden. In the garden, people from the neighborhood grow fruit, vegetables and herbs together on almost 40 small plots.
Bürgergarten Laskerwiese (Citizens' Garden Laskerwiese) is all about intergenerational, neighborly gardening with people from different social backgrounds. In the garden, people from the neighborhood and the surrounding area decide for themselves what they want to grow on the 10 square meter plots. There are joint gardening days to exchange ideas and help each other with workshops, seeds, seedlings and gardening tips and tricks. The association also maintains the public park. There, the lawn is mowed, the trees are pruned, flower beds are planted and the park is kept tidy and clean. The model of neighborhood garden and public park is unique in Berlin.
