The concept is very simple: A man with a microphone in front of a big screen shows excerpts from films and television programs. Juxtaposing clips, he adds commentary, draws up unexpected connections, and uses the source material to discuss – live on stage – contemporary politics, society, east and west, gender roles, intergenerational conflicts, the media, the zeitgeist, and the history of German mentalities. Occasionally, he is joined by illustrious guests to match or balance out his boomer- and Teutonic-centred perspective. Expect unending word cascades garnished with ludicrous video scraps that are both entertaining and insightful. Kuttner himself describes the format – which made its debut at the Volksbühne in 1996 – as a mix of “cultural criticism, philosophy, and utter nonsense.” Which pretty much says it all. With Jürgen Kuttner and André MeierAuthor and director Lena Brasch will be their guest on 21 December.
