Following the comprehensive, international exhibition “Body Performance,” which was on display at the Helmut Newton Foundation in 2019, the follow-up exhibition “Rooms / Stages” is now taking place; however, this exhibition dispenses with artistic documentation, shifting the context and focus from the performative act to the stage space itself.

For movies, so-called “location scouts” are sent out in advance of filming to search for specific locations that are suitable for certain scenes. In the finished film, the main focus of our perception is ultimately less on the stage spaces and more on the actors and actresses and their portrayal of their roles, as well as on the complexity of the film's plot as a whole. Only when we love a particular film and watch it again do we sometimes take the time to study other details such as the lighting, sound, costumes, or set design. The same applies to theater. In photography, we also rarely perceive a space as a motif in an image, unless the space itself is declared the main motif by the photographer.

The artists in the current group exhibition are each presented with a group of works that represent their own creative output. They consciously incorporate the space into their staged portraits or dance images, allowing the people or dancers to disappear from it again through long exposures.
