Resistance and dignity

Connected struggles of Roma and Sinti after 1945

The exhibition "Resistance and Dignity" by the feminist organization RomaniPhen e.V. and the FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum focuses on the knowledge and experiences of Rom*nja and Sinti*zze. From 1945 to the present day, Roma and Sinti*zze have been fighting for a dignified life and remembrance.

The persecution and disenfranchisement of Roma and Sinti in Europe began long before National Socialism (NS) and did not end even after 1945. After the Second World War, not only was there no comprehensive reappraisal of the Nazi genocide, but many survivors experienced a "second persecution" instead of recognition and compensation. In the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), files, laws and structures of persecution were continued for decades - albeit now without the intention of extermination - while reparations, the restitution of property and citizenship were denied and an active reversal of guilt was pursued. A broad social reappraisal of these injustices has yet to take place.

The exhibition highlights various struggles of Roma and Sinti and their interconnectedness after 1945, focusing on the often unmentioned and therefore less visible narratives. This includes struggles for recognition and remembrance of Sinti*zze in the GDR, struggles for the right to stay by Roma*nja since the late 1980s and the struggle of Roma*nja for recognition of the European dimensions of the Nazi genocide. The exhibition also sheds light on some feminist Romani initiatives that have been making new demands for self-determination and representation since the 1990s.

In the 80th year after the capitulation of the Nazi regime, the exhibition shows the persistent, diverse and yet united resistance of a political movement that is still fighting for recognition and justice today.Translated with DeepL
