The multi-sensory show stages the last years of Vincent van Gogh's life as an emotional experience and brings the genius painter and his iconic works to life in an impressive way.

The exhibition “Between Madness and Wonder” on the RAW site in Berlin stages the last years of the life and iconic works of the world-famous painter Vincent van Gogh. As a 360-degree experience, the immersive show takes a new look at the artist's final creative period and transports visitors to the French towns of Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. There, between 1888 and 1890, he created the works that are now among the most famous in art history.

This impressive production focuses on the close relationship between the painter and his brother Theo - friend, patron and probably the most important constant in Vincent's life. The intensive correspondence between the brothers is historically documented and forms the basis of the exhibition narrative. Over one hundred letters full of thoughts, doubts and hope open a window into Vincent's inner world and invite visitors to get close to this extraordinary artist, who painted against the darkness of his life with every stroke of his brush. Visitors delve deep into van Gogh's world of thoughts and experience how his fears and longings become tangible in letters, sketches, paintings and stories.

In the showroom, the heart of the exhibition, visitors are literally drawn into the fascinating world of the painter. They stroll alongside the exceptional artist to the “Café Terrace in the Evening”, stand under the sparkling sky of the “Starry Night” and allow themselves to be completely enveloped by the bright yellow of the “Sunflowers”. While elaborate all-round projections create intoxicating worlds of color full of emotion and allow visitors to experience van Gogh's works in a previously unknown way, they move freely through the space. They listen to the thoughts of the torn artist, feel his doubts and his unwavering passion to capture life in color.

Using state-of-the-art technology, van Gogh's works are projected onto surfaces up to 10 meters wide and over 5 meters high in the exhibition hall - a total visual experience that restages his unmistakable colors and brushstrokes in vibrant light. Original quotes from his letters accompany the visual spectacle and create closeness to an artist whose work is still deeply moving today. A specially curated soundtrack acoustically complements the immersive world - creating a sensual, multimedia experience. This exciting dialog between art history and the present invites visitors to take a look into the world of the great master's soul and rediscover his works with all their senses. An experience that will not only delight fans of the Dutch painter, but also anyone who wants to feel, experience and interact with art in order to escape everyday life for a moment.
