Railway: Trains, Locomotives and People

The railway makes it particularly clear: the history of technology is also the history of everyday human life. In its exhibition "Trains, Locomotives and People", the German Museum of Technology shows the history of impressive vehicles and everyone who had anything to do with the railway.

  Der Führerstand eines Berliner S-Bahn-Triebwagens von 1927 erinnert an die Einführung der Stadt-, Ring- und Vorortbahnen nach dem ersten Weltkrieg. Sie werden bis heute über eine seitliche Stromschiene versorgt, die speziell hierfür entwickelt wurde – Der rot-gelbe Führerstand eines S-Bahnwagens steht im Vordergrund, dahinter steht ein großes S-Bahn Schild in der Ausstellung.

  Die Skulpturen „Tag“ und „Nacht“ des Bildhauers Ludwig Brunow (1843-1913) befanden sich einst über dem Haupteingang des Anhalter Bahnhofs. Heute begrüßen die restaurierten Galvanoplastiken die Besucherinnen und Besucher am Eingang zu den Lokschuppen. – Zwei große, grün angelaufene Bronze Figuren stehen links und rechts vor den gelben Backsteinsäulen der historischen Lokschuppen. Zwischen Ihnen steht eine schwarze Lokomotive.

  Über eine Drehscheibe im Boden und weite Tore lassen sich die Schienenfahrzeuge rangieren und in den Lokschuppen fahren. – Ein roter Abteilwagen steht in der offenen Tür des Lokschuppens. Im Hintergrund erkennt man die Rundung des Schuppens, einen Schornstein und einen Wasserturm.

At the heart of the exhibition are more than 40 original rail vehicles, some of which still exude the smell of soot and oil. In addition, unique, highly detailed models of wagons and locomotives on a scale of 1:5 are shown, which were made around 1900 as journeyman's pieces. Both are embedded in a multitude of objects that illustrate how people lived with and for the railway: carriage compartments, souvenirs, uniforms, dining car crockery, suitcases, tickets, toy trains.

The chronological tour leads from the forerunners of the railway in the 18th century to the open passenger carriage of 1843 - one of the oldest preserved in the world - to the locomotives and carriages of the West German economic miracle and the GDR. Those who wish can walk under a locomotive or climb into a driver's cab and play locomotive engineer for once in their lives.

The Holocaust is also commemorated in the exhibition: specifically the decisive role of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the murder of European Jews in the "Third Reich". As a symbol of the deportations, a freight wagon is at the centre of the exhibition unit "Deportations of the Jews", which presents twelve individual Berlin fates and shows pictures, maps and timetables.
