Stolz und Vorurteil

How does AI know what Jews look like? How do you? And can there ever be an image of "the Jew" capable of doing justice to the plurality of Jewish lives and the contradictions of Jewish history and the present? The desire to produce such an image has long shaped art history, cinema, and, more recently, algorithmic image cultures and platforms such as TikTok. Filmmaker Nico Beyer's work enters this field of troubled representation. His short films offer fragmentary portraits of contemporary Jewish life in Europe—not as definitive statements, but as partial, situated encounters. Rather than seeking a singular image, they insist on the irreducible multiplicity of Jewish experience: identities performed before the camera with pride, doubt, and everyday ease. Their proposition is one of counter-images: many images instead of the one image of Jews.

Yet these many images are themselves contested. They must navigate, on the one hand, the external gaze—the attributions imposed by a non-Jewish majority—and, on the other, ongoing debates within Jewish communities over the politics of representation. Who, then, has the authority to represent whom, and how? These tensions become audible in the audio installation surrounding Nico Beyer's films. It gives voice to the many challenges that shape contemporary perceptions of Jews and Jewish self-representation today: distorting stereotypes, antisemitic hate speech on social media, AI fakes, anti-Israeli visual propaganda in the wake of Hamas's October 7 massacres, and the fundamental question of whether self-

determined, truthful representations of Jews can exist independently of this overwhelming flood of antisemitic imagery.
