Liebermann's World

„When you enter Berlin, just turn left“, that‘s how Max Liebermann described the way to his home on Pariser Platz to his guests. Completely destroyed during World War II, the Max Liebermann House was rebuilt in the 1990s and is now home to the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor. With its public documentation Liebermann‘s world, the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor now recalls the eventful life of Max Liebermann (1847–1935) and his family.
Ostracized at the beginning of his artistic career as a „painter of the ugly“ and a „poor man‘s painter“, Max Liebermann developed around 1900 into the most successful representative and supporter of modern art in Germany. Founding member of the Berlin Secession, president of the Berlin Academy of Arts, portraitist of the bourgeois elite of the German Empire and the Weimar Republic – the documentation Liebermann‘s world looks back on the highlights of Max Liebermann‘s life. Likewise, the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor recalls the tragic fate of the Liebermann family particularly of Martha Liebermann after the Nazis seized power.
Separate chapters on Martha Liebermann focus on an impor-tant protagonist in the family's history and contemporary history, supplemented by an intervention by Berlin artist Josefine Reisch. Further exciting additions during the exhibition period will combine historical documentation with the present day, including an audio station from May 2026 that will allow visitors to experience Max Liebermann in an audiovisual format.
Virtual reality experience At Liebermanns’
The virtual reality experience At Liebermanns’ reconstructs Max Liebermann's home and studio, which was completely destroyed during World War II. In a fascinating journey through time via VR glasses, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore the music room, dining room, study as well as Max Liebermann‘s famous studio with its glass roof.
