The bestselling author and co-founder of the Jung von Matt advertising agency is one of the most influential creative minds in the communications industry. His artistic works have recently been exhibited at the ZKM Karlsruhe and the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, among other venues.
In his latest series of works, he presents tableaux that take up motifs from the vanitas tradition and at the same time reverse them: the focus is not on the end, but on the moment of change. Temporary arrangements of candles, texts, and figures form the basis of the photographic stagings.
As wax melts and flames change, light, shadows, and image surfaces shift. This creates images in which transience itself becomes productive: new meanings and new pictorial spaces develop from the disappearance of forms. The works thus take up the idea that nothing passes away without creating space for something new.
