In Conversation: Stan Douglas and Eva Respini

In the June edition of the “In Conversation” series the artist Stan Douglas will speak about his work with curator Eva Respini.
In his work, Stan Douglas explores the mechanisms of historiography. The videos in his media installations have no beginning or end; instead, they loop or consist of narrative elements that are constantly reassembled by a computer. In this way, Douglas breaks down linear structures and creates alternative interpretations of historical events—a process the artist calls “recombinant narratives.” Stan Douglas has participated several times in Documenta. In 2022, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. Eva Respini has held curatorial positions at The Museum of Modern Art, ICA/Boston, and is currently Co-CEO and Curator at Large at the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 2022, she served as curator and co-commissioner for the U.S. Pavilion’s presentation of Simone Leigh at the 59th Biennale di Venezia.
Thanks to a gift by Friedrich Christian Flick, the Nationalgalerie’s collection includes the series Subject to a Film: Marnie (1989) by Stan Douglas, the film installation Der Sandmann (1995) along with the accompanying photo series Potsdamer Schrebergärten (1994/2003), and the photo series Suspira (2002), which was created as part of documenta 11. Works by Stan Douglas have been featured in numerous exhibitions at the Hamburger Bahnhof since 2001: For example, in 2007 he curated the exhibition Beyond Cinema together with Christopher Eamon; the project was coordinated by Joachim Jäger and Gabriele Knapstein. most recently, his works were on view in Magical Soup (2020/21), Scratching the Surface (2021), and Broken Music Vol. 2 (2022/23).
The talk will be held in English.
The event will take place at the Aktionsraum. Entrance via Invalidenstraße, to the right of the main entrance.
