Urban space is full of signs - some are absolutely clear and unmistakable, others are rather cryptic. Our exhibition focuses on graffiti and street art in Neukölln and sees itself as an invitation to become more aware of these forms of expression in urban space and at the same time to better understand them.
Instead of an art-historical classification, we have chosen a more ethnographic approach:
How does the city communicate with itself?
Who is writing for whom?
Graffiti and street art are visually omnipresent - but the meaning of the signs and images is often only revealed to insiders. In this sense, our exhibition offers help in deciphering the visual codes.
The focus is on a documentary approach: hundreds of photos from Neukölln's urban space form the visual basis of our exhibition. With the help of three large-scale projections, we bring a piece of the urban space into the museum; explanatory commentaries complement the presentation.
In addition, seven interviews with actors and crews offer very personal insights into the motivations, techniques and attitudes behind the images - supported by very personal objects from their everyday lives. We touch the threshold between the necessary anonymity and intimacy through very sensitive portraits.
The exhibition is framed by a surrounding gallery hanging with works by the three photo artists Jürgen Hohmuth, Maximilian Meisse and Tanja Schnitzler.
The MUSEUM in DIALOGUE format offers curated walks through Neukölln, guided tours by the curatorial team and discussion events.
ZEICHEN.SPRACHEN.STADTRAUM is not an exhibition for or against graffiti, but an attempt to make the often overlooked visible and legible. Because the walls of houses, electricity boxes and bridge pillars reflect more of our urban present than we might think at first glance.
