Zur Sonderausstellung „Cassirer und der Durchbruch des Impressionismus"

Mit seiner Galerie in Berlin beförderte Paul Cassirer die Verbreitung des französischen Impressionismus in Deutschland. Künstler wie Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Monet, Renoir und van Gogh erlangten durch ihn erstmals größere Aufmerksamkeit im deutschsprachigen Raum. Zahlreiche Schlüsselwerke fanden durch seine Vermittlung Eingang in bedeutende deutsche Sammlungen und Museen, darunter auch in die Bestände der Nationalgalerie. Ein Rundgang durch die Sonderausstellung beleuchtet den Galeristen und sein Leidenschaft für Kunst.

Based in Berlin, Paul Cassirer made a decisive contribution to the spread of French Impressionism in Germany with several hundred exhibitions in his gallery. He brought artists such as Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Vincent van Gogh to the attention of German-speaking countries for the first time. By presenting their works, Cassirer had a lasting impact on the German cultural landscape and sparked passionate public debate. Numerous key works found their way into important German collections and museums through his mediation, including the holdings of the Nationalgalerie.

Cassirer did not limit his commitment to the mediation of French art alone. He also championed German Impressionism and supported the Berlin Secession, including artists such as Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt. At the same time, he promoted important pioneers of classical modernism such as Ferdinand Hodler and Edvard Munch, while Ernst Barlach, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Paula Modersohn-Becker, the young avant-garde, also found their way into his gallery's program.

The exhibition "Cassirer and the Breakthrough of Impressionism" shows Paul Cassirer's impressive commitment to art with over 100 outstanding works of Impressionism and classical modernism.

Highlight: This show is one of the top exhibitions in Berlin in 2026.
