Moments of the End and the New Beginning

In May 1945, Berlin lies in ruins and smoke hangs over the rubble of the once magnificent, now destroyed city. To mark the 81st anniversary of the end of the war, the special photo exhibition is dedicated to this defining event in German and European history and presents rare, previously unpublished photographs and documents from the archive of historical researcher and author Robert Kraska. Tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians lost their lives on the road to peace. Here in Berlin, where the Second World War began in Europe, it comes to an end and life begins anew amidst the rubble.
The carefully selected photographs document not only the destruction of Berlin and the dramatic battles, but also the effects of the end of the war on the city and its inhabitants as well as the awakening of new life in the streets. The documents on display – testimonies, maps, orders and letters – shed light on many a personal fate and make experiences tangible. In this way, the exhibition provides a deep and unfiltered insight into the final act of the Second World War in Europe.
