In this anniversary year, the Alte Nationalgalerie presents encounters between 20th- and 21st-century works and 19th-century art on all three floors, inviting visitors to engage in associative viewing. In 1876, the National Gallery opened as a venue for contemporary art. Today, under the name Alte Nationalgalerie, it serves as the flagship institution of the National Gallery and the museum dedicated to the art of the long 19th century. All six venues of the National Gallery—from the Alte Nationalgalerie to the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart – Hamburger Bahnhof—are united by a shared collection.
