Amnon David Ar and Kurt Mühlenhaupt – two artists who have never met, yet who both ask the same question: How does one paint life as it is?
As part of Berlin Art Week 2026, we are opening our new exhibition *The Magic of Everyday Life*. It features new works by the Berlin-based painter Amnon David Ar in dialogue with works by Kurt Mühlenhaupt. Ar draws our attention to the overlooked. He finds beauty where others pass by: childhood objects, toys, portraits, people in wheelchairs – depicted directly, without distance, with a focus on the everyday.
What makes a picture an honest one? What is beauty if it does not stem from the subject matter, but from the language of painting itself?
Mühlenhaupt painted 20th-century Berlin with the same honest approach. At the Kurt Mühlenhaupt Museum in Berlin-Kreuzberg, his work provides the historical context: two artists, different eras, a shared question — what does it mean simply to be here?
