Working on the image of the resistance fighter: from Käte Niederkirchner's shining armor to the crown of Vasily Goryachkin's head

Interview with Franziska Schwarzbach about her work as a sculptor in the GDR

Franziska Schwarzbach was born in Rittersgrün in the Ore Mountains in 1949. She studied architecture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, but turned to portrait sculpture a few years later. As a candidate in the artists' association, her first commission was a portrait of Käte Niederkirchner for the school of the same name in Bötzowstraße. The small sculpture, made in cast stone and bronze in 1979, shows the fully sculpted head of the communist. The image of a resistance fighter (the female form was less common at the time) had to conform to certain standards. In conversation, the artist explains her conflicts and approach.Translated with DeepL
