Everyday Life in Berlin’s Forced Labour Camps

New Research - Lectures and Discussion

Zwangsarbeiter in einem Berliner Barackenlager, 1943

Zwangsarbeiter in einem Berliner Barackenlager, 1943

Little is known about everyday life in Berlin’s forced labour camps. Two new research projects offer important insights.

In his master’s thesis, Fabian Dietrich analyzed daily life in the camps: how did the inmates use these spaces, and against which structures did they have to assert themselves? His work is based primarily on the victims’ diaries and investigative files from Nazi authorities.

Friederike Brückner is an archaeologist. She examined remnants of clothing found in the area of accommodation camps on Tempelhof Field. In her master’s thesis, she relates these finds to historical sources.
