Somatic Shrines for Crip Times is an immersive performance and exhibition modeled on the concept of a shrine honoring the lived experience of people with disabilities. The project creates an aesthetic language for what disability feels like made visible through performance, digital art, and health advocacy.
The performance consists of offerings given to imagined avatars connected to emotions including pleasure, grief, and anger within the context of disability experiences. These avatars are digitally projected and emerge during the piece as embodiments of disability experience and wisdom. Each performer gives a specific offering to their avatar through personal gesture and choreography drawn from their own experience, translating emotion into color, visual animation, and form. The audience is positioned in a variety of accessible seating options as the avatars move between the performers, creating a speculative space in which disability wisdom can be communicated across time and between people.
The process is designed to make participation more accessible for people with disabilities while also capturing subtle emotions and sensory experiences from lived experience. Some aspects of production are created in domestic settings and virtually, reflecting the reality that not all people with disabilities can travel or leave their homes. Elements of the work are developed through access-centered practices including choreography rooted in disability experience, masking, and COVID testing. The performance is a method to share the realities that are left socially invisible but are visceral, vibrant, and living just beneath the surface.
