How can you value yourself when society doesn’t? “EXXY” (Australian slang for, ‘that’s expensive, mate’) is a bold, vulnerable and tender exploration of imposter syndrome and fragile self-worth.Dan Daw, who provided a highlight at NO LIMITS in 2022 with “The Dan Daw Show”, takes the audience on a journey to the Australian outback. To the place where his life began – shaped by working-class roots and by having to get by on very little. He looks back on his journey as a Queer crippled artist and on what it means to hold one’s own in a society that repeatedly labels you as “different”. Together with three performers, Dan finds serenity in the possibility of finally being one of many – after having always stood out his whole life.Visually provocative, emotionally fearless and threaded with humour, “EXXY” refuses to offer easy answers. Instead, the work explores the contradictions Dan Daw embodies: bold yet insecure, triumphant yet uncertain, longing for community yet determined to be one of a kind.
Dan Daw Creative Projects is a disabled-led company who are leading the way in creating accessible international touring work that blurs the lines between theatre, dance and activism. Through long-term partnerships and residency programmes, it advocates for systemic change within institutions and the industry to benefit d/Deaf and disabled artists and their audiences.
